We’ve got a new player entering the high-stakes game of the television anime schedule, and the early intel suggests this is going to be a very interesting negotiation.
The official announcement has landed: The Final-Boss Prince is Somehow Obsessed with the Chubby Villainess is getting an adaptation. This isn’t just a rumour; an official website has gone live, backed by a promotional video and a key visual. To add weight to this offer, the original manga artist, Kaname Hanamiya, has released a commemorative illustration to seal the deal.
The Team Behind the Table
You don’t bring a knife to a gunfight, and Studio Lings clearly understands that. They are holding the production reins, with Naoyuki Kuzuya (Possibly the Greatest Alchemist of All Time) sitting in the director’s chair. He’s supported by Shūsaku Katō as Assistant Director. The series composition—essentially the strategy for the entire operation—is being handled by Mitsutaka Hirota (Edens Zero), while Infinite is taking the lead as general producer. Character designs are being drafted by Fumino Kakihata and Yukiko Sekita. It’s a solid lineup.
The Voices in the Room
When it comes to the talent representing the protagonists, they’ve brought in the heavy hitters. Haruka Shiraishi—known for her roles as Asirpa in Golden Kamuy and Fumino Furuhashi in We Never Learn—is set to play Celine. Opposite her, taking on the role of Wilfred, is Takeo Ōtsuka. You’ll recognise him as Aqua Hoshino from Oshi no Ko or Jinshi in The Apothecary Diaries. Casting these two is a clear signal that they intend to make a significant impact.
The Intel on the Story
Here is where the dynamic shifts. The narrative follows a protagonist who dies from an illness only to wake up in a new reality: reincarnated as Celine, the selfish, overweight villainous duchess from a popular novel. In the original script, she is destined to be killed by the hero prince. Her counter-move? She decides to reform her character and fight that destiny.
But the situation has evolved. Instead of a battle to the death, she finds herself in a bind with a different kind of adversary: a prince with yandere tendencies who becomes dangerously obsessed with her. The manga, written by Kotoko with art by Kaname Hanamiya, debuted in April 2023.
To give you an idea of the leverage this title has, the series has already surpassed 70 million digital downloads. That is a massive amount of interest before the animation has even aired.
It seems the audience is already invested. How are you planning to approach this new series?
