The contract marriage trope has been done to death. Yet somehow, we keep coming back for more. There’s a reason for that. The Japanese understand this appeal, and come July, The Duke’s Son Claims He Won’t Love Me Yet Showers Me with Adoration—or KimiAi to its mates—will grace our screens.
Monday brought official confirmation: the romantic comedy is making the leap from page to screen. A trailer and promotional visual accompanied the news, with TV Asahi locked in for the Japanese broadcast.
The Team Behind the Curtain
Zero-G and Glass are co-producing this one. An unusual pairing, granted, but sometimes the best results come from unexpected alliances.
- Hitoyuki Matsui takes the director’s chair. If you watched Tonikawa: Fly Me to the Moon, you’ll know the man understands tenderness on screen.
- Tomoko Konparu handles the scripts—a proper veteran of the shojo genre. Her fingerprints are all over Kimi ni Todoke and NANA.

The Voices
No expenses spared on casting:
- Yui Ishikawa voices Elsa Yukarainen. You’ve heard her as Mikasa in Attack on Titan, Violet in Violet Evergarden, and Two-B in NieR:Automata. The woman delivers gravitas without effort.
- Soma Saito tackles Julius Roias. He brought Moriarty to life in Moriarty the Patriot and currently voices Chigiri in Blue Lock.
The Story Itself
Kei Misawa penned the original novel. Natsu Mizuno adapted it for COMIC Polaris.
Elsa’s a noblewoman whose family has lost everything. She remains relentlessly optimistic despite circumstances that would break most people. Through necessity rather than romance, she enters a contract marriage with Julius—next in line for a dukedom, emotionally distant, and upfront about his complete lack of romantic intentions.
We all know where this goes. The fun isn’t the destination; it’s watching two people who clearly adore each other fumble about pretending they don’t. It’s Pride and Prejudice with Japanese sensibilities and better animation.
