King Amusement Creative confirmed this Friday that A Pen, Handcuffs, and a Common-Law Marriage—the mystery-romance manga by Shinichi Sawaragi and illustrated by tank Gasuyama—is receiving a television anime adaptation.
The announcement arrived with a teaser video and commemorative illustration, offering a first glimpse at the project’s visual direction.
The Challenge: Adapting Absolute Silence
Even the creators were skeptical. Sawaragi confessed he thought an anime would be “absolutely impossible” due to his heroine’s muteness. Gasuyama, meanwhile, celebrated the chance to see his work in motion.
The production committee has revealed nothing else—no studio, no cast, no crew. The soundscape remains a mystery.
What We Know About the Story
- Eiji Kirisame — a serious 40-year-old detective whose life is his job
- Tsugumi Kuchinashi — a silent high schooler who communicates only through sketchbook doodles
- They meet at a crime scene during an investigation
Eiji treats every squiggle as a vital clue. Then one drawing delivers an unexpected message: “Will you marry me?!”
It strips away the small talk and gets right to the point.
The Numbers Behind the Silence
Serialized in Hakusensha’s Young Animal since 2022, the manga has:
- Exceeded 400,000 copies in circulation
- Seventh volume releasing
The Big Question
Will the anime give Tsugumi an internal monologue—cheating the premise—or will they have the nerve to let silence breathe, trusting animation and expression to carry the weight?
When you force an audience to lean in and pay attention to the gaps, you change the dynamic entirely.
