TV Asahi confirmed Thursday that the anime adaptation of Akane-banashi arrives . But here is what actually matters: full episodes will stream on YouTube. Free. For North America. No subscription required.
The trailer is live now on the Akane-banashi Global channel. Subtitles available in English, Latin Spanish, and Portuguese. They mean business.
The Setup
ZEXCS produces the animation. Ayumu Watanabe directs—he made Children of the Sea. Kii Tanaka handles character design. Kikuhiko Hayashiya serves as rakugo supervisor. This detail matters. Rakugo demands precision: one performer, minimal props, total reliance on voice and timing.
The Cast
- Anna Nagase voices Akane Osaki. You heard her in Summer Time Rendering.
- Takuya Eguchi plays Karashi Nerimaya. He is Loid Forger from Spy x Family.
- Rie Takahashi is Hikaru Koragi. She voiced Megumin in KonoSuba and Ai Hoshino in Oshi no Ko.
- Jun Fukuyama plays Shinta Arakawa. Lelouch. Koro-sensei. Enough said.
- Nobunaga Shimazaki, Chiaki Kobayashi, Yohei Azakami, Seiichiro Yamashita, Akihisa Shiono, Masaki Terasoma, and Akio Ōtsuka round out the ensemble. Credits include Baki, Jujutsu Kaisen, Mashle, Fate/Zero, and Bleach.
The Story
Akane Osaki watched her father perform rakugo as a child. She loved it. Then he failed his shin’uchi exam—the highest rank—and faced public humiliation. Six years later, Akane enters the same brutal world. Her goal: restore his honour by achieving what he could not.
What does it say about the industry when a major production bypasses traditional licensing and goes straight to a free global platform?
If this model works, how long before other studios follow? And how long before gatekeepers push back?
