The Studio Ghibli has often taken Western literary stories as inspiration and adapted some of them in cartoons such as The Tales of Terramare by the American writer Ursula K. Le Guin. Recently, however, the illustrations dedicated to the famous story by Hayao Miyazaki have resurfaced on the Internet, The Nutcracker.
Studio fans immediately assumed there was a new movie in production, but in reality it’s part of it Drawings by Master Miyazaki specially and exclusively for a special exhibition in the Ghibli Museum, which is exclusively dedicated to the topic History written by ETA Hoffmann.
The original story, called The Nutcracker and the Rat King, was quite successful at the time of publication, however was well known thanks to the ballet of the same name whose music was composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, who has also received numerous adaptations over the years, including Disney’s The Nutcracker and the Four Realms.
On Christmas Eve, the protagonist Clara receives a certain nutcracker as a present, to which she immediately binds. Suddenly, that night, the Nutcracker comes to life and becomes human, leading Clara on adventures in a realm steeped in magic. At the bottom of the news you can find some of the illustrations on display, signed by both Hayao and Hiromasa Yonebayashi, the director of Arriety and When Marnie. Recall that Princess Mononoke met The Legend of Zelda in a fanart and that Toshi Suzuki, co-founder of Studio Ghibli, is also a candidate for the Tokyo Anime Award.
