Marvel is in the process of making the cartoonish Shang-Chi more similar to its cinema counterpart: unlike the character played by Simu Liu in the cinema, the kung fu master was never particularly associated with the Ten Rings, but as of May he is Shang-Chi’s story is updated.
If in the Marvel Studios film directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (here is our review of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), if the story of the protagonist is closely linked to that of the powerful artifacts, it’s completely different with comics: The ten rings depicted as bracelets in the movie are actually rings in the comics, which have properties similar to the Infinity Stones.
In any case, the new Shang Chi run, written by Gene Luen Yang and illustrated by Marcus To, is rewrites the story of the kung fu master who wields the power of the Ten Rings like his cinematic counterpart from issue #12.
“Earth is under attack by Shang-Chi’s grandfather and Ta Lo’s forces!“reads the summary published by Marvel.”To save his world, Shang-Chi must submit to his late father’s wishes and inherit the deadly Ten Rings. But will he be able to wield their power, or will there be too many temptations?“.
Shang Chi No. 12 will be released on May 4, 2022 in the United States. Below we share the cover of Leinil Francis Yu’s issue. Marvel broke the news the same day that Shang-Chi’s film received an Oscar nomination in the Best Visual Effects category (all 2022 Oscar nominations here).
