Written on the official site for the anime adaptation of the light novels by Hajime Kamoshida and illustrated by Keji Mizoguchi, Seishun Buta Yarou series (Rascal doesn’t dream) release details have been announced for the first film in the franchise’s new sequel project.
According to the statement, the film Seishun Buta Yarou wa Dekake Shisuta no Yume wo Minai (Rascal doesn’t dream of a sister who ventures out) will be character-centric Kaede Asusagawa and has his Premiere planned for sometime in summer 2023 (July-September) in Japanese cinemas.
The synopsis writes:
- In December, I was wishing for the future of my first love, Shoko, who had passed away, and before I knew it, I, Sakuta, was in my third semester of my sophomore year of high school. When Mai, a third-year student at Minegahara High School, ends her high school life, Sakuta’s younger sister, Kaede, who stayed at home for two years, opens the doors of her heart that she had never seen before by no one. “I want to go to the high school my brother goes to.” It’s a big decision for Kaede. Sakuta gently presses on Kaede’s back, knowing that it is an extremely difficult decision for her. “Kaede” receives the feelings entrusted by the previous “Kaede” and takes a step into the future!
On the other hand, the second movie titled as Seishun Buta Yarou wa Randoseru Garu no Yume wo Minai (Rascal doesn’t dream of a backpack girl) and focused on the character of Mai Sakurajima, has no planned release date yet. However, it should be noted that international fans of the franchise are quite concerned about the decision to continue the anime franchise through two films since the film Seishun Buta Yarou wa Yumemiru Shoujo no Yume wo Minai (Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl) was never legally distributed on any platform.
For their part, Kamoshida and Mizoguchi began publishing the light novels through the publishing label Dengeki Bunko from the publisher Kadokawa in April 2014. The work inspired a thirteen-episode anime adaptation produced by the studios CloverWorksLed by souichi masui and scripts written by Masahiro Yokotani, released October 2018; followed by a film in June 2019.

Summary of the Seishun Buta Yarou series
One day in the library where Sakuta Azusagawa studies, he encounters an unexpected sight: a beautiful high school girl dressed as a bunny. It turns out to be Mai Sakurajima, a famous former actress and fellow Minegahara High School classmate. However, his surprise at seeing Mai in the library in such a daring outfit is nothing compared to the shocking realization that he’s the only one who can see her! Sakuta remembers an event from his past and offers to help Mai figure out the reason for her invisibility. Although their relationship is initially contentious, the two quickly grow closer: Mai and Sakuta come to appreciate each other and their friendship blossoms into a budding romance.
All the greater is his determination to solve Mai’s dilemma. As the investigation continues, Sakuta attributes Mai’s situation to an urban legend known as Adolescence Syndrome: strange phenomena that occur in adolescence, unexplained by science and often dismissed as delusions. With few promising results, Mai’s situation deteriorates to the point where not being seen is the least of her worries. Will Sakuta and Mai be able to unravel the mystery of their Teenage Syndrome before it goes away completely?
