A real Pokémon craze has broken out over the past year, with millions of fans around the world increasingly interested in buying and evaluating trading cards. Regrettably, As demand increased, so too did thefts, and a few days ago the unthinkable happened in the Netherlands.
After the reconstruction of a local newspaper, a group of thieves broke through the window of an Intertoy in Voorburg near Rotterdam, and stole a huge amount of Pokémon-themed products, including obviously various trading card packs. The robbery occurred on Friday, September 17, around 9:30 p.m. local time, and the estimated economic damage amounts to more than 10,000 euros, including theft and property damage, according to the authorities.
The reported case isn’t the only Pokémon-themed theft. A few months ago a man climbed a building in Tokyo to steal rare cards, while in France a collector’s set worth around 20,000 euros was stolen from a Youtuber. In addition, several anti-scalper measures have been approved in the US, but the situation continues to worsen.
Pokémon cards are an extremely profitable market, and as the months go by, more and more enthusiasts and collectors are buying packs in the hopes of finding a rare card to resell for astronomical sums. Unfortunately, the low percentages and the steadily growing interest of fans have led to an increase in thefts, and the Dutch case may not be the last.
