Jinta Yadomi lives peacefully as a hermit, spending his days outside of school and playing video games at home. On a hot summer’s day, his childhood girlfriend, Meiko “Menma” Honma, appears and harasses him to grant her a forgotten wish. He doesn’t pay attention to her, which annoys her, but he doesn’t care. After all, Menma died years ago.
At first, Jinta believes she is just hallucinating because of the summer heat, but is later convinced that what she is actually seeing is Menma’s ghost. Jinta and her group of childhood friends were separated after her untimely death, but they reconnect while trying to bring Menma’s spirit into peace. By reliving their pain and guilt, will they find the strength not only to help Menma but also to help themselves move on?
