Since the launch of its own platform to publish its own products abroad, Weekly Shonen Jump’s presence in the world has intensified. Month by month, Manga Plus has been growing, bringing new projects and products, but some like manga ONE PIECE continue to be translated through groups of scans.
If many French, Spanish and other language groups represented on the portal have decided to stop translating several manga, the same cannot be said for the English language, the most popular in the world. ONE PIECE in English comes much earlier and not only with leaks and spoilers but also with complete chapters even several days before the official release. The popularity of Oda’s manga is too tempting for many people who try to anticipate the release more and more but often not with decent results.
Several well-known industry Twitter accounts – Sandman and Artur, known for their contribution to the ONE PIECE community – have pointed this out recently several translation errors in the pirated copies of ONE PIECE. The nature of these errors can be both a wrong statement of the sentence, and a complete misunderstanding of the situation.
It is from these two that two of the most important examples of the current Egghead saga come. As Artur points out, in the tweet with Zoro we see the pirate speaking in two different ways: in the official and corrected version, Zoro imposes his terms on Lilith without hearing reasons, while in the pirated copy he is much more accommodating, thereby losing the impact of the character’s sentence.
The second case instead involves Sentomaru and presents a completely wrong translation: According to the unofficial version, the Navy is contacting Sentomaru, while in reality the Navy is interfering with communications. Of course, there are many other cases where there are quite glaring discrepancies and translations fall apart.
