The war between Russia and Ukraine has prompted various sectors from around the world to band together in support of the occupied country. Anime and manga culture has not escaped these events either, so much so that the author of Ashita no Joe launched an initiative to which more than 100 mangakas responded.
Rocky Joe’s father Tetsuya Chibaafter returning home from heart surgery in January 2022, came to the fore to start a charity auction where They have joined 110 Major mangakato support Ukraine. The initiative started on October 3rd with 146 sketches and original illustrations by some of the world’s most famous authors such as George Morikawa (Hajime no Ippo), Akihito Tsukushi (Crafted in the Abyss) and many others.
Chiba Sensei explained the origins of this idea as follows: “I started this project because I was wondering what I could do as a cartoonist during these difficult times. I hope that the movement in support of those suffering will continue to spread around the world“. The auction will last until October 23 and the proceeds will go to Doctors Without Borders, who are tasked with administering the proceeds for the benefit of Ukraine and its citizens.
