The anime industry runs on production committees—multiple companies pooling money so nobody goes bankrupt if a project fails. It’s the safe play. It’s been the standard for decades.
MAPPA looked at that system and said “we’ll play it safe” “get out of here, I’ll go there.” They financed Chainsaw Man entirely out of pocket.
Manabu Otsuka, MAPPA’s president, finally explained why they made such a suicidal decision by industry standards.
The Nostalgia That Started It
Tatsuki Fujimoto’s original story hit Otsuka with raw, twisted nostalgia. It reminded him of his early days at Studio 4°C—the exact reason he pursued animation in the first place.
The manga’s DNA fit MAPPA’s philosophy. So they set a goal:
- Retain every single rights slice of the pie
- Control production, international distribution, marketing, merchandise
- Keep all profits without reporting to anyone
- Reinvest in the studio itself
The money would improve working conditions, train new animators, and buy better equipment.
The Pressure of No Safety Net
Otsuka admitted the first season was a very difficult birth. The team was green. The studio structure wasn’t ready for such a monster alone.
Without a committee, any financial disaster would fall directly on their heads.
However, they endured.
The Reze Arc movie’s massive success proved the gamble paid off. They’re now preparing the Assassin’s Arc adaptation.
What Is Chainsaw Man Anyway
For those who live under a rock: this story follows Denji, a kid in absolute misery who merges with his chainsaw demon dog and becomes a government devil hunter.
It’s a roller coaster of:
- Blood
- Twists that leave you staring at the wall
- Characters with their perception of reality completely altered
Why This Matters for the Industry
MAPPA’s move is extremely rare. If they keep this pace, it could change how independent studios operate.
Animators suffer because committees keep the money. The question becomes:
Should more studios risk financing their own works, or is this a leap into the void that’s too dangerous for everyone?
