The Veteran Team Behind the Animation
Since no release window or voice cast has been revealed yet, the production committee focused attention on technical talent. The project was placed in the hands of creatives with vast experience in handling comedies, fantasy scenarios, and relaxed narrative rhythms.
- Takayuki Inagaki as general director. Known for directing the iconic supernatural comedy Rosario + Vampire.
- Hiroko Kanasugi in charge of series composition. Expert in spinning slow rhythms after scripting Drug Store in Another World – The Slow Life of a Cheat Pharmacist.
- Mariko Fujita as character designer. Responsible for the memorable, stylised designs in the Galaxy Angel franchise.
This isn’t a crew that accidentally stumbles into a relaxed narrative pace; it’s a crew that meticulously engineers it.
From Web Novel to an Expanding Universe
The rise of this isekai franchise is a true example of perseverance in the industry.
- Began in 2016 as a simple new website on the popular amateur writing site Shosetsuka ni Naro.
- Volume 20 of the printed novel released in February.
- Volume 21 arrives this Friday, April 24.
Beyond the core novels, the saga has expanded significantly:
- Two regular manga adaptations by artists Maneki on Manga UP! and 888 on ComicWalker.
- A spin-off prequel manga titled Zero Sword and Sorceress World, illustrated by Piyoko Hatori, exploring the protagonist’s early years.
The Story: Opting Out of the Game Entirely
The narrative introduces a middle-aged office worker whose monotonous, exhausting reality changes when he’s transported to a fantasy world.
He arrives not as a novice, but as Zelos Merlin, his hyper-broken video game avatar.
Instead of seeking epic conflicts, enlisting in the royal army, or attempting to save the world from a Demon King, our protagonist takes a different route.
He decides to weaponise his broken abilities to ensure he never has to work a proper day in his life again.
It’s an acute observation of human nature: sometimes the ultimate power move is simply opting out of the game entirely.
The genius lies in its subversion of the saviour complex. Faced with god-tier magical abilities, he does what any sensible, chronically exhausted adult would do: choose a quiet cup of tea over epic glory.
