The most famous live-action clip with Hayao Miyazaki is arguably the infamous scene from the documentary Never-Ending Man, in which he appears as computer graphic animated creature created by artificial intelligence. The director’s reaction was angry disgust: “I firmly believe that this is an insult to life itself”.
This sentence was already quoted by the UK podcast Ghiborienque in a tweet in response to a project that was changing Miyazaki himself in a photorealistic CG character in a meticulously detailed picture. You can see the CG image and a photo of the real Miyazaki at the bottom of the news.
Maybe Miyazaki wouldn’t be so mad because the CG image is not the work of an artificial intelligence program. Instead, it’s that meticulous work by Yingkang Luo, a character artist in the software house Naughty Dog. The creation of the work is described in detail on his website and in the YouTube video above.
“His works always bring warmth to our heart“Commented Luo,”So I decided to take a picture of him“. Luo used the following software: Houdini, Arnold, Maya, NUKE, Zbrush, Substance Painter, Marvelous Designer, and Texturingxyz.
It is not known whether Miyazaki himself, who is currently producing his next studio Ghibli film How Do You Live, has been informed of this simulation.
