Square Enix announced this Friday that From Overshadowed to Overpowered—or Rakudai Kenja no Gakuin Musō—is getting an anime adaptation this July. The premise has teeth.
Picture this: you spend your entire existence mastering magic, only to realise you’ve got zero natural gift for it. You die frustrated. Then you wake up 400 years later with all that hard-won knowledge intact. The magical world has gone thoroughly downhill. Suddenly, your “mediocre” abilities look rather different.
The Talent Behind It
EMT Squared are handling production. Hisashi Ishii directs, with Yuusha, Yamemasu among his credits. Deko Akao handles series composition, and Hideki Furukawa adapts Kentarou’s manga designs for animation.
The Voices
- Shuuichirou Umeda leads as Ephtal, known from Zom 100 as Akira Tendo
- Reo Osanai voices Anastasia, fresh from Farming Life in Another World
- Haruka Shiraishi takes on Marline, recognised for Golden Kamuy
The Hook
Ephtal’s second chance throws him into an academy setting alongside Anastasia—a young slave—and Marline, the institution’s director who happens to be his former student. The power fantasy writes itself.
There’s something satisfying about a protagonist whose strength comes from centuries of genuine graft rather than a convenient cheat skill.
So what’s the one element that would make you commit your Friday evenings to this when it lands?
