Most of the species found in the Dragon Ball Z universe appear to reproduce in a manner similar to that of humans. However, one group of characters in particular takes very different paths and the protagonists have been able to get to know them better during one of the most important sagas of the series.
During the epic Freeza saga, first Gohan, Bulma and Krillin and then Goku landed on the planet Namek. At this point various pieces of information were revealed about the Namekkians, the people to which Piccolo belongs. This species reproduces differently than the othersThere is only one element of the population that can produce offspring, and upon its death, that ability is transferred to another character. The Great Sage of Namek produces eggs – like we saw with the Great Piccolo in Dragon Ball – from which babies are born. But how does it all work?
The Japanese scientist Okuyama, who has been giving various information about the origins of Cell and other details of the Toriyama universe in the last few days, also touched on the Namekkians and their reproduction, bringing a real-world example with him. Okuyama first deals with bees, but emphasizes that these insects do not have a mechanism similar to that of the Namekkians. Instead, so him, ie Namekkians resemble hairless moles, or Heterocephalus glaber, a species of mole in which there is only one female that can reproduce thanks to the activation of some pheromones. No other female can reproduce until the matriarch dies: at that point, only one other female activates these pheromones and thus the ability to reproduce.
A mechanism similar to that of the Namekkians therefore and might explain why no one can reproduce on Namek while Piccolo had no problem with that on Earth.
