It's been three years since Goku was able to eliminate the Red Ribbon threat. Growing up and becoming an expert in martial arts, the protagonist meets up with his historical companions in the city where the 22nd Tenkaichi Tournament was organized and is ready to face new opponents. Thus began the fourth great saga of dragon ball.
One of the main novelties of the saga is the introduction of Tenshinhan and Jiaozi, as well as the introduction of their master: the Hermit of the Crane, who trained alongside the Hermit of the Turtle in the past. The three characters appear in the first chapter of the new saga, 113, and the two students will take center stage in the more advanced stages of the tournament. The qualifying rounds happen quicklyand show how much Krillin and Yamcha, who also became Roshi's students, have improved over the three years of time jumping.
Goku finds himself up against King Chapa, winner of one edition of the tournament and an expert in eight-hand technique. Despite the ruler's excellent preparation, the protagonist easily manages to defeat him. Meanwhile, Tenshinhan shows his skills against Nam who got hit by Goku in the 21st Tenkaichi Tournament and manages to reach the Quarterfinals. The eight fighters remaining in the competition are: Goku, Krillin, Yamchu, Jackie Chun, Wolfman, Pamput, Tenshinhan and Jiaozi.
At Tenshinhan's request, Jiaozi uses her telekinetic powers to bring out the desired combinations. After an even fight with Yamcha, Tenshinhan manages to fend off a Kamehameha and wins by breaking Roshi's disciple's leg. Jackie Chun, on the other hand, doesn't have much trouble against the wolfman Krillin manages to defeat Jiaozi after realizing that in order to take advantage of the crippling technique, he absolutely must use his hands. Instead, in one of Toriyama's neat gimmicks, Kuririn provokes the opponent with math questions that force them to count their hands, and then manages to get them out of the ring.
Goku manages to get through the round with no problems, taking out Pamput with very quick punches. In the first semi-final, Jackie Chun meets Tenshinhanwho, thanks to his master, learns that he is fighting the Turtle Hermit. After using a Kamehameha on Roshi, Tenshinhan passes the round because the old man chooses to leave the ring of his own free will.
friends and rivals, Goku and Krillin are the protagonists of the second semifinal. Both begin to struggle with their powers. Despite Krillin's skill and dedication, it's Goku who runs through and sends him out of the ring. Goku manages to reach the finals for the second time in a row, this time against Tenshinhan.
Tenshinhan's aggressiveness and Goku's preparation bring to life one of the most intense and spectacular clashes of the first part of the series. Faced with the protagonist's threat, the Crane Hermit asks Jiaozi to manipulate Goku's movements, only to stop when Tenshinhan reveals that he wants to win fair. Further changes lead Tenshinhan to rely on his most powerful technique: the Kikoho.
The saga of the 22nd Tenkaichi Tournament narrated from chapters 113 to 134ends with Tenshinhan's victory and Kuririn's death, killed by someone shrouded in the shadows.
