The final part of the Rebuild tetralogy will debut in streaming on January 20th in China. Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0Hideaki Anno’s masterpiece. However, given the media frenzy the official key visual has caused, distribution seems ill-fated.
The advertising poster was indeed entrusted to the care of the Chinese artist huanhai, quite a household name in the land of dragons. It’s an illustration that sees the Eva 01 unit kneeling in the rubble, with a crescent moon behind it that seems to pierce it. A pretty moody image for the film, but one that seems to hide far too many similarities to the French artist’s work Nico Delort.
Aside from the different composition, many users have pointed out that some parts of the two works are almost identical, from the details of the clouds to the idea of ββthe crescent moon. Studio Khara intervened in the matter to clarify that Huang Hai’s work was carried out without the involvement of the film’s staff or other company employees. The day after the poster was removed followed by a statement that follows:
“Our deepest apologies to Nico Delort and everyone else involved. We sincerely apologize for the use of resources during the design process without obtaining the artist’s permission and for insufficient internal controls by our team, none of which should have been allowed. We are currently reaching out to Nico to apologize directly and offer compensation.
We also want to humbly apologize to all Evangelion fans who have been upset by our actions. We hope our mishandling of the situation has not damaged your love for Evangelionβ.
