Luffy’s long-awaited power-up is finally here. It’s not as expected on an aesthetic level and it’s not on a skill level, at least in part. Eiichiro Oda decided to have fun and focus on a specific vision of that power and what it means. So ONE PIECE changes the style.
A few tables from ONE PIECE Chapter 1044 were enough to understand that the fight between Luffy and Kaido would have taken a toon drift. the ONE PIECE 1045 pictures and spoilers Confirm Oda’s choice and increase the dose. The chapter begins with the cover of Weekly Shonen Jump and a double color page featuring the entire crew. On the rooftop of Onigashima, Kaido devours Luffy, but suddenly zigzags and then swells: all the fault of Luffy, who balloons and spits out.
Momonosuke and Yamato can’t believe their eyes as they climb onto the roof and directly observe Luffy’s new technique: the Gom Gom no giant, with the Mugiwara becoming a giant and beginning to use Kaido to jump rope. The dragon doesn’t fit in and uses a boro breath that sweeps Luffy away, turning him all black and with afro hair, but a comical scene is enough for the protagonist to fly back to Onigashima and return as before. Kaido transforms into a hybrid form and, unsurprised, smacks Luffy on the head and knocks her to the ground.
Luffy is surprised and his eyes pop out of their sockets and the same effect happens to Kaido’s soldiers and his friends who stayed under the dome. The head then returns to its place and Luffy looks exhausted with the “voice” fading, but suddenly the drums start playing again and he returns in fifth gear. Kaido hits Luffy on the head again, but this Protagonist of ONE PIECE has the same shape as the bat, become a comic character. Nothing seems to work as Kaido wonders what the absurd effects of his devil fruit are.
In the finale of ONE PIECE 1045, Luffy fires a violent punch that pierces Kaido’s face. Luffy is having fun, the Emperor is lying on the ground with no visible injury. The fight continues in the next chapter.
