2021 is the year of souls. This is borne out by the numbers, which show a 32 percent growth in demand for Japanese series in the US and the West, but also the increasing sales and the increasingly natural interest of the public in animated series, which is why Netflix recently renewed its commitment to the industry.
In the west as well Anime has become part of the mainstream thanks to the success of series like Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, My Hero Academia and Tokyo Revengers and are featured daily at sporting events by artists and show people like John Cena, Megan Thee Stallion and Snoop Dogg, and they very often land on Twitter trends during the Publication of certain episodes. If we add to these events the extraordinary success of films like Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, Belle or Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0, then it is clear why many streaming sites like Prime Video and Netflix are getting more and more interested, tries to capture an ever-growing audience.
Netflix in particular started a real revolution. In the past two years, the US giant’s acquisitions have skyrocketed, with dozens of original anime and partnerships announced with Japanese studios, and recently the weekly distribution of episodes of new anime series that appear in the fall. The latter is certainly the most important step forward.
Just like for Better Call Saul-caliber TV series, actually Netflix has decided to distribute simulcast anime with Japanwithout the long waiting times that you have seen in the past with Beastars 2, Attack of the Giants 3 and 4 or Demon Slayer.
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean, for example, is released monthly rather than at the end of the anime, while Blue Period and Komi Can’t Communicate are published weekly, one episode at a time. In doing so, the streaming giant hopes to gauge the real public interest in these acquisitions, remove piracy from the equation, and potentially make new investments in the sector.
