Japan is the land of manga and anime, so it is normal for the archipelago to be dotted with animated houses. Studio Pierrot, Toei Animation, Studio Ghibli, Madhouse and many others: these are names that we have heard often and that resonate in the ears even of non-fans. In Japan, however, there is more than 600 studies.

The market is therefore flourishing, even if the conditions of the entertainers are often not the best, on the contrary. But Japan is not a small country: where Japanese animation studios are concentrated and where the most famous are? User Josuke has created a map that takes 622 animation studios into account and places them in the different prefectures of the country.

As expected, most of them are in Tokyo. 542 of the total of 622 are headquartered in the Edochian capital. In the rest of the country we find a good concentration in Saitama (prefecture north of Tokyo), Kanagawa (prefecture south of Tokyo and where the city of Yokohama is located) and Osaka. Aside from the capital, we have Kyoto Animations, which is of course in Kyoto, the PA Works Studio based in Toyama and Studio Trigger with one of the offices in Fukuoka.

Then we drive to the capital, which is conveniently divided into districts in the following infographic. Most animation studios focus on Suginami (138) and Nerima (103), while the surrounding areas attract the rest. We have summarized the most famous studies:

  • TMS entertainment, Toei animation, Madhouse, Studio trigger in Nakano;
  • Ufotable, Studio Bones, Cloverworks, Sunrise, Wave, Card to Suginami;
  • Studio Ghibli in Koganei;
  • David production at Kodaira;
  • WIT Studio, Science Saru, Gainax and Production IG in Musashino;
  • JC employee e Pierrot study in Mitaka.

The concentration of the studios in the Suginami and Nerima districts, as well as in the surrounding districts, allows animators to move quickly for the various jobs, although recently some studios such as MAPPA are changing their strategies.
