February 16, 2015 on the pages of Weekly Shonen Jump debuted the first chapter of Black clover, the popular magic series that entered its final story arc eight years later. To celebrate Black Clover’s eighth birthday, Yuki Tabata’s work landed on the cover of Shueisha’s iconic weekly magazine.
Chapter 355 is celebrated with the release of Black Clover Eight years of serialization on Weekly Shonen Jump. Among the various anniversary projects, a special poster has arrived for the film Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King, coming to Netflix in June. However, Yuki Tabata didn’t just do this illustration.
On the occasion of these celebrations Black Clover earned the cover of Weekly Shonen Jump. The full color cover, designed by Sensei Tabata, shows Asta pointing the demon-slaying sword at readers with a backward gaze and a mocking smile. The beautiful cover reminded the more experienced of an earlier appearance in the same magazine.
As we can see from the tweet comparing the two covers, Black Clover’s illustration is an overt homage to an earlier Weekly Shonen Jump cover featuring Bleach on the magazine’s cover. The work of Tite Kubo certainly inspired Tabatawho shaped the characters of Julius Novachrono and Nozel Silva based on Sosuke Aizen and Byakuya Kuchiki.
