On the official Twitter account for the original anime by To kyo games and studying Pierrot, Akudama Drive, it was announced that on December 24th a "Important announcement"for the project. Further details were not disclosed in the statement, but some are expecting a second season given the open ending of the original twelve-part series.

Akudama Drive

The series premiered in Japan in the fall 2020 season (October-December) and had a total of twelve episodes, with Funimation distribute in the west. This series was originally scheduled to premiere in July 2020 but has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. When choosing Anime trends, this original anime was selected as "Anime of the Year - 2020".

Production team

  • Studio pierrot Yes To kyo games were credited with the original idea while Kazutaka Kodaka (Danganronpa) the original story was credited.
  • Tomohiro Taguchi (Cinema no tabi, Sousei no Omyouji) was responsible for directing the anime in the studios Pierrot, with the help of Yoshifumi Sasahara (Kuzu no honkai, Cinema no tabi).
  • Norimitsu Kaihou (Danganronpa 3: The End of Kibougamine Gakuen: Mirai Hen, Gakkou Gurashi!) was responsible for writing and overseeing the scripts.
  • Cindy H. Yamauchi has the original character designs from. adapted Rui Komatsuzaki for animation while Aida Shigekazu was responsible for the composition of the soundtrack.

Akudama Drive summary

The lively metropolis of Kansai, where cyberscreens litter the neon landscape, may seem like a technological utopia at first glance. But in the dark alleys around the shiny buildings there are still a number of unscrupulous fugitive criminals known as "Akudama". Nobody is aware of the existence of these people and the Kansai Police have started the countdown to the public execution of Akudama, known as the "assassin", who is guilty of the murder of 999 people. However, several Akudama received a mysterious message with the mission to save "assassins" for a lot of money. A mastermind tries to bring these dangerous people together in one place to make sure that the execution of the plan is carried out perfectly and turns into a full blown bloodbath if necessary.
