At this point Boruto: Naruto the Next Generations has become a certainty. The sequel with Boruto doesn’t sell as well as Naruto it defends itself well enough in the manga landscape, while Studio Pierrot’s anime continues to spark and continue its transmission week after week, constant.
2021 ended with big shocks for both media: what will happen in 2022 for Boruto: Naruto the Next Generations? Let’s take stock of the storyline of both mediums to understand how the story, now written by Masashi Kishimoto and no longer Ukyo Kodachi, could continue.
Let’s start with the manga, which arrived at a crucial stage in the story. For now, Boruto is more than half the story, according to previous statements from the writers. The transition between generations is completed, with the defeat of Isshiki on the one hand and the weakening of Naruto and Sasuke on the other. To achieve this, however, Naruto’s death is necessary, a death already anticipated in the first chapter. 2022 could be the right year for this event given the current situation. Besides the previous one, the next 11 chapters of the manga will be very important in this perspective, projecting the protagonist into a new future and a path that will lead him to the end.
And what about the Boruto anime? Studio Pierrot’s project experienced an important acceleration in 2021: the studio’s decision to focus on events written in the manga paid off, significantly advancing the story and character development after years of fillers. However, all of this also had a price to pay, which is supposed to come much closer to the events of the manga. So 2022 could be another year full of fillers for Boruto due to the inability to project too far ahead and trigger events that would leave no room for any sort of stop.
There is no other special news for Boruto, who – given the current situation – could also use a film filler to bring other viewers to the cinema. Who knows if a project like this will have enough momentum to really get going.
